Elementary Math Curriculum

A good elementary math curriculum for home school should include more than just the “how to” of basic arithmetic. It should incorporate elementary math activities that develop a strong math foundation for your child.

This foundation should be deep and broad and at the same time conceptual and instructional or “how to”. Elementary math should be the strongest building block of a your child’s math abilities.

This is the stage where a little of each math strand concept is introduced.

If your child misses out on one concept, he will have a hard time coping up when he encounters more difficult math problems. This is why it is very crucial for your child to develop his math skills as early as possible.

There are a lot of strategies for teaching an elementary math curriculum at home. The most important thing that you should remember is that math concepts and activities should be taught to your child using the proper sequence.

This sequence should be designed to build a solid foundation for your child’s competency in math subjects.

Your child should learn concepts about quantity, number recognition, number meaning, and operations. These concepts should then be applied through solving basic arithmetic problems like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

It is important that your elementary math curriculum implements teaching math concepts in the proper sequence. You should also use elementary math activities that allow your child to build understanding, skill and confidence progressively.

Your curriculum should be able to assess your child and determine his math strengths and weaknesses. Incorporate a personalized curriculum that aims to equip your child with a solid foundation in math.

One of the goals of elementary math is to prepare your child for harder math concepts and problems. Your curriculum should also be able to incorporate fun learning activities to keep your child interested in math.
