3rd Grade Math Lessons

3RD grade math lessons focus on multiplication and division. At this point, third grade students are to learn another set of mathematical skills.

It is important that they understand the transition from addition and subtraction to multiplication and division. Explain to them the relevance of each function and how are they related to each other.

You may start by showing an example. If we take 2 groups of objects with each group having 5 in each and we count all of them, we get ten objects.

To make the counting much faster, a new skill is to be added which is multiplication. All we have to do then is multiply two by five or represented as 2 X 5, and we get the answer 10.

Here are a few tips to make these lessons more interesting.

1. Make flash cards. Provide the class a multiplication table and ask them to memorize it. You may start asking them to memorize per table such as by 2’s, by 3’s, 4’s, and so forth.

By using flash cards, you can enhance their ability to memorize and remember information. Make use flash cards big enough to be seen by everyone.

Avoid being fancy and too colorful. You are not in an art class. You’re objective is for the students to remember and be able to memorize the multiplication table.

You may even pull a game by grouping the class into two. Let them answer the flash card and whoever get s the highest correct answers wins the game.

2. Use real objects to demonstrate. Take one whole of pizza with eight slices. Get and eat one of the pizzas and ask them what fraction of the pizza have you taken?

So it should be one slice divided by the eight slices. Take another one, so this time it has become 2 slices out of the 8 slices have been taken. Now, you have demonstrated another 3rd grade math lesson which is division.

Remember to be creative when teaching 3rd grade math lessons. It doesn’t have to be pure memorization. Prepare some games for the kids to enjoy. Learning should be made easy and full of fun.
